This course covers many aspects in the field of sociolinguistics. First and foremost, different definitions of sociolinguistics according to different scholars. Second, it differentiates between some concepts, namely accent, register, style, and lingua franca; with examples. Third, it throws light on the process of standardisation and speech community as a social situation. Also, this course includes some linguistic and historical knowledge about pidgins as well as creoles. Besides, this, it speaks about the different types and reasons for code-switching and diglossia. Last but not least, it covers the phenomena of monolingualism, bilingualism and multilingualism.
